Dresden Files, Hub, Home Brew Star Wars

We're currently trying to get three campaigns off the ground.

1. Dave (I don't think he has an lj account) is running a Dresden Files game. We've got bits and pieces of the rules. We don't have the magic system rules, but we're not about to let that stop us. [livejournal.com profile] mnemex, Nunzio (who has a blog, but I'm blanking on his user name), and I showed up last week for first stage character generation. [livejournal.com profile] agrumer joined us today, and between tonight and a week's worth of work in person and on the wiki, we're doing well, I think.

The setting in NYC, so we all have a strong sense of place. And the cast of PCs and NPCs multicultural enough that Dave asked for someone to please name an NPC something simple, like Fred.

The characters are:

Peter Able, played by mnemex. A Gentleman Wizard Detective. Able, mnemex explained, means "breath". He was thinking Peter Whimsey and Peter Davison. Peter seems really good at getting into trouble, as does his NPC mentor. His guest star appearances are in Guaril's and Vincenzo's novels. First novel: Last Rite, where he needs to clear his mentor of a murder charge.

Guaril Badi, played by Nunzio. A knife-juggling bodyguard. (The "bodyguard" part may get redefined as "monster hunter" or "protector".) He grew up in a Romani carnival where a lot of the families were cursed to turn into wolves. His guest star appearances are in Vincenzo's and Miguel's novels. First novel: Shifting Sky, where Peter helped break the curse, but only after making things much worse.

Vincenzo Agosti, played by me. A mob boss with connections to the Winter Court. I may change Vincenzo's last name, since agrumer suggested that we add to the way our PCs are mirroring each other. His PC's last name is from a word meaning "Holly", and apparently, a lot of chess sets used to be made of holly and ebony. I stole the Rising Action plot from Integra's backstory in the anime series Hellsing. His guest star appearances are in Peter's and Miguel's novels. First novel: Working title is Grail Dance, but I'll probably change that, as we all agree that we don't want the Grail involved. Vincenzo needs to find some artifact for the Winter Court and make sure a meeting of mob bosses goes smoothly, all of which becomes more complicated when his son is kidnapped.

Miguel Acevedo, played by agrumer. A psychic bureaucrat. An idealist with Cassandra's Tears, and in many ways, the reverse of Vincenzo. We decided that they had the same confessor, a man who knew about the supernatural world. His guest star appearances are in Peter's and Guaril's novels. First novel: Cross Purposes, which may involve the confessor being in some sort of trouble.

NPCs include Vincenzo's family, Peter's mentor, Miguel's confessor, and, to keep Dave happy, Fred Jones, who's teaching Thaumaturgy to Vincenzo. Oh, yes, and the troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, who, we agreed, was not a big, lumbering guy. He's a troll, all right, with all the power of a troll, but he is small and crotchety.

Troll: So, you want to see the troll under the bridge? Well, here! Take a good look! Now, shoo! Go away!

He has the Aspect: Get off my lawn!

And one more: NYC has three Chinatowns. One is in Manhattan; one is in Flushing, Queens; and one is in Brooklyn. agrumer created a strange guy who pushes a food cart in all three of these, simultaneously.

We're hoping to nail the remaining bits of first novels down by Saturday, when we hope to have the first full session.

2. Star Wars. In theory, this will have a rotating GM. In practice, [livejournal.com profile] ebartley and [livejournal.com profile] jlighton expect they'll get stuck with most of the gming. We will probably be using the OTE system, although we were talking about adding Aspects. agrumer, who's not in this one, said to take a look at the Fate wiki and at Wheel of Fate.

The game is set after Revenge of the Sith, but there are a few changes. Yoda and Palpatine killed each other. Anakin is dead, dead, dead -- no Darth Vader. Did I mention that Anakin is dead?

Palpatine did give the order to kill the jedi, and it was carried out, for the most part. The Republic is crumbling into chaos, and Mace Windu is trying to take over, for everyone's good, of course, and is in peril of going over to the Dark Side of the Force. The PCs aren't likely to cross his path for quite some time to come.

Currently, the PC concepts are:

An engineer, played by ebartley. She doesn't actually have a light saber, but she built something that can function as a basic plasma sword.

A partly trained jedi -- trained by a jedi who washed out -- played by jlighton.

A padawan who's virtually a jedi, but the jedi who was her master was killed before she could graduate. Played by mnemex.

A Robin Hood style space pirate, played by me. As I've just read a couple of volumes of Pumpkin Scissors, I'm thinking of making the pirate a victim / beneficiary of some kind of experimental program. The Clones weren't the only experiments going, surely.

3. Hub. This is ebartley's second campaign based on James Schmidt's Hub stories. The system will probably be OTE. The action will be set on a planet that Pre-Colonization is gradually withdrawing from as a corporation gradually becomes the new government. The PC concepts are:

[livejournal.com profile] crash_mccormick is playing an Annoying Kid, I think. He had a private chat with ebartley, so I'm sure there's a surprise or two up his sleeve.

[livejournal.com profile] jlighton is playing a corporate troubleshooter.

[livejournal.com profile] mnemex is playing a military colonel of some kind.

I'm thinking of playing an eccentric aristocrat.

Able means able, love. However, Abel means breath.

Yes. I like anagrams.

I mentioned it at the time, but yeah, you can't expect everyone to remember everything.

My engineer does have a light saber. She calls it something more complicated, keeps it attached as a cutting tool in her workroom, and uses it as a cutting tool -- but it's a lightsaber and if she needed to cut heavy metal in place, it would be obviously so.

Wow, I think I'm crossing out of "geek" and crowding the line of "loser fanboy nerd" by saying this, but:

IIRC, according to SW canon, a lightsabre can *only* be constructed by Jedi. Apparently, he alignment of the crystals (or the overscanning of their plotholium matrix, or some such) requires Force ability.

Btw, Dave == perldiver. :> I hadn't realized you had an LJ before this.

Looking back at this, it's funny to see all the things that have changed. And yeah, I've had the cart guy and the troll sitting in my NPCs file for a long time now, trying to figure out how to work them in.
