Sad News

I'm not sure there's anyone reading this who doesn't already know, but Mike Ford, aka John M. Ford is dead. I posted about it here, and what seems to be the closest thing to an online wake is at Making Light.

I am snob for good writing. Mike wrote brilliantly. I did not aspire to write that well. I aspired to understand all the nuances of what he'd written, some day.

He also wrote GURPS Time Travel and The Yellow Clearance Black Box Blues for Paranoia, among other gaming products. Steve Jackson wrote about Mike here.

So. Work is stressful. My Mom has dementia. My Dad has various health issues. And, I want to take a week off to rend my garments and weep for the loss of this man I hardly knew.

You are not the only one - his death hit me much harder than I would have thought. More than once in the last few days I found myself tearing up while reading the snippets of poetry he left on-line. last night I was up past midnight finishing The Final Reflection again, taking a break only to locate and reread Chain Home, Low, easily the best story in the Sandman anthology.

For all I know that he got more time than he thought he would, he got less than he should have.
