Journies on the Etheric Sea, part 2
I did a stealth quickie-writeup of the first session in the original Etheric Sea post. Go there first.
This has sat on my phone for a -very- long time (the second ES game was what, a week after the first?) but I figured I should finish it up and post it since I'm running again tonight. Yeah, that's a long gap.
The second adventure began with our heroes (and their ship) attacked by three crab-like beasts of a sort that had given them trouble in the first session, as they fled through a worldgate directly into its exterior storm, without the usual precautions, because they were fleeing a privateer or pirate who they'd momentarily shaken.
Duggan ably took the wheel, but found he could not make any headway against the storm -- yet neither did the ship find itself in immediate jeapordy.
Meanwhile, Captain Jenny Starling attacked one crustacian beast, while Cat, avoiding the danger of magic, ably distracted a second. Cat was successful, but Jenny found that despite her strength and skill, the Carnelian crab was impervious to her blade, which bounced off its shell. Moving with a speed no aquatic animal should be able to attain outside its abode, it held her hands in its claws, about to rend her in twain, as it and its siblings had slain her seamen. But before it could bring its strength to bear, the beast's head burst -- a bullet from Christopher Riley's steady hand laying it low. He and the captain shared a smoldering look. Meanwhile, with the comand crew otherwise occupied, the third crab wreaked carnage among the crewmen.
Cat, seeing that the crab's heads were not so hard as their bodies, lightly lept her crab, acrobatically avoiding it's attack, and struck it from behind. But as she vaulted over it, the creature's claw caught at her chest -- doing no wound to her body, but in tearing open her tunic, endangering her disguise. Her counter-attack, however, came to naught; her blow had not a bullet's punch, and could not penitrate. Captain Starling, seeing the bloodshed, boldly charged at the third crab, distracting it from the crew. Her blow, though, also missed it's mark, as the crab lept, quick as lightning, high in the air, to attack from above. Duggan, percieving that the surviving seamen still paniced, rallied them, and they went to work with a will, setting the sails to the storm, and with Duggan's able hand on the tiller, the ship sailed out of the storm.
Cat, seeing a way to kill two birds (or crabs) with one stone, leapt toward the other combat, luring the horror into juping after her, thus putting it on a collision course with the other crab. The crabs colilided in mid-air, disturbing the attack of the one dueling with Captain Starling. and sending the other falling within reach of Duggan, who's blade dealt it a deadly blow. Christopher Riley handed Jenny a spear, and with both their hands holding the shaft, the surviving sea creature was skewered as it fell, saving the ship and the surviving seamen.
The crew dined well on monster crab that night.
My remaining notes from the session are as follows:
[A Matriarchy?
The dreaming crystal.
Some discusion of disguise.
An arrival.]
Extrapolating from that and my vague memories, Captain Jenny remembered that she'd been to their destination before. The upside is that they like her. The downside? Last time she visited, she was a lone victim of shipwreck.
Christopher Riley did some research, yes, research, not radio communication with his secret masters at all, and found out that the place is a strict matriarchy.
Meanwhile, unattended, a crystal in the treasure they'd brought on board began to glow.
Jenny and Christopher Riley decided that they needed another woman to deal fairly with the natives, and quickly settled on Kat, who made a very fine girl for some reason. Unsuspecting, they discussed plans for making sure their deception didn't get revealed.
Meanwhile, Durgan inspected the treasure. Oddly, he found he'd carried a crystal away with him when he left. Though he tried to return it, being an honest sort, it was still in his pocket half an hour after being returned to the vault.
That night, Kat's disguise complete, Durgan dreamed of a female voice, who begged his help...
The next day, they reached land. The customs inspector was joyful at the possibility of trade (the kingdom being off most maps and trade routes), as well as that of bringing the hero of the realm, Captain Jenny Starling, back again. The Queen, she said, would be -very- glad to see Jenny.
On their arrival at dock, our heroes was met by a greeting party, lead by the Queen's Aunt. She'd been warned of their arrival, and said she was there to conduct their Captain and First Mate (i.e. Kat) and what attendants they chose (the other PCs) into an audience with the Queen, but first they (and particularly, Kat) would need to be made presentable (Oh no!). Without further ado, she left with the girls in tow, leaving the men to be appropriately re-dressed by the men's quarter (the harem? Not quite the same).
