Demons are limited to Passers (in animal form) and Possessors (without Hop).

GM: Lisa Padol

Joshua Kronengold: Herr Doktor Professor Sebastian Black, disqualified from being Graf von Black due to his limp. Teaches Philosophy.

His demons: 'Elena, a Passer Raven, and Minerva, a Possessed Mouse. 'Elena is jealous of Minerva, but has not yet tried to eat the new demon.

Dave Demast: Herr Doktor Professor Andreas von Ouranenburg, not himself a noble, but cousin and friend of Graf Rupert von Ouranenburg. Teaches Natural Philosophy, with dissections and vivisections. Potential serial killer, falling in love with Sebastian's niece Ysabel.

His demons: Orion, a Passer Dog, and Leonardo, a nobleman possessed by a rabbit spirit.

Beth Bartley: Ingrid von Pfender, plague-scarred heiress and university student. Wears a veil to hide her scars. Like Andreas and Sebastian, she discovered the existence of Possessor demons a day ago. Unlike them, she has not tried to summon a Possessor.

Her demon: Aquila, a Passer Eagle.

Julian Lighton: Niccolo di Tarci, talented artist who would want to be Leonardo da Vinci if he'd ever heard of him. Horrified at having summoned a Possessor demon into the daughter of his patron, and less than thrilled to learn that he'd given her brother, Marcello, the idea of summoning a Possessor into his brother Leonardo. Before that, Niccolo was blissfully ignorant of sorcery, and Marcello had only summoned demons into his children, not realizing that one could summon them into adults. Niccolo has only recently become aware of the existence of Passer demons and plans to summon one to deal with the demons in Marcello's children.

His demon: Teresa Mantuo, a noblewoman possessed by a fox spirit. Leonardo's sister. Teresa is starting to lose patience with Niccolo. Her Need is physical intimacy; her Desire is Love. Last session, Niccolo gave her plenty of the former, as they had sex as part of an attempt at banishing the latest demon summoned by Marcello.

Pamela Gutman: Sophia von Winterhagen, scandalously unmarried, but hardly celibate. Sophia is a swordswoman, a sort of society-approved assassin-for-hire who takes money to kill people in duels. She does not know about Possessor Demons.

Her demon: Nariya, a Passer Cat.

Andreas' noble cousin, Graf Rupert von Ouranenburg, had figured out that Andreas was in love with Sebastian's niece, Ysabel von Black. He decided to take Andreas back to the university in his carriage and talk with him about that.

Now, Andreas was too far below Ysabel's station for a marriage to be possible. Rupert had to marry, but had no interest in women. He suggested that he marry Ysabel and claim that she was calling for Andreas when Ingrid's uncle, Horst von Pfender, had kidnapped her and her father, because Andreas had acted as a go-between for Rupert. That way, Rupert could continue his relationship with his lover, Ludwig, the nephew of the head of the university, while Andreas and Ysabel could continue their affair. Rupert would acknowledge any children as his own.

Rupert: After all, they would be von Ouranenburgs.

Andreas said that he had to think about this. Rupert had the coach drop him off at the university.

Andreas was eager to get to his lab, where he had one corpse and two demons. He was stopped by Einhardt Schilderote, Ludwig's uncle, head of the university and Andreas' food chain. Schilderote tried, perhaps too subtly, to say

a) Andreas was university people, and Einhardt would protect him. Sorcerer? Ysabel's lover? No problem.

b) Andreas had to stop associating with Bad Sorts, aka Sebastian, whom Einhardt had just tried, unsuccessfully, to fram for murder. Einhardt's nephew, Ludwig, had sent his demons to dispose of the corpse. Einhardt had figured this out, but wanted to make sure that Andreas, the closest thing there was to a forensics expert (commentary from the players on my previous write up referred to a crime scene as CSI Vindabona), didn't interfere with any of his plans.

Andreas finally went down into his lab, which was locked, as he'd left it, but not as Niccolo had left it. Andreas opened the door and saw that the corpse of Teressa's evil brother, the sorcerer Marcello, was still where he had left it, and the unconscious body of the demon-possessed peddlar Axel was as well. However, Marcello's demon-possessed brother, Leonardo, was now strapped down as well, and Professor Joanna Gavelli turned to look at Andreas as he came into the room.

Joanna had been lured down, if I recall correctly, by Leonardo, but had kept her head when he tried to rape her. As Leonardo's need is to submit in ritualized power games, she was able to immobilize him. She'd even fed Axel the sedative that Andreas had told Marcello to feed him.

In retrospect, that last was far too convenient for Andreas. I should have racheted up the tension in the situation, and made Joanna suspect Andreas of Dire Doings, I think.

As it was, Andreas told Joanna most of the truth:

-- Marcello was a sorcerer
-- Axel was possessed. He drew Joanna's attention to the claws, the bug diet, and the lack of recognition of Andreas
-- Leonardo was possessed, not merely acting like an arrogant nobleman

Joanna was, if reluctantly, convinced. She agreed to support Andreas' story. Andreas ignored Leonardo babbling about the other visitors to the lab.

This was understandable, as there was a bloodcurdling shriek from above.

Andreas and Joanna arrived to find Rainer studying the fresh corpse of Einhardt. It had been killed by large felinoids, as Andreas soon determined. Rainer and Andreas assured each other that neither had done this, while Joanna went to fetch help. Rainer made it clear to Andreas that he suspected Sophia. He was well aware that it was Nariya, Sophia's demon, who had really killed Horst von Pfender, Dieter von Horst, some guards, and Sophia's parents. He understood, more or less, why Sophia might want to do that, but Einhardt's death was an unfortunate, and bewildering, complication. (Actually, Sophia had done some of the killings on her own, but she was blaming them all on a Horrible Demon, except possibly Horst's, as she'd accused him of summoning the Horrible Demon.)

What Rainer didn't know and Andreas was not about to tell him was that Einhardt's nephew, Ludwig, was a sorcerer with cat demons.

Sebastian delived the snake demon that he'd summoned with Niccolo's help to his niece Ysabel, currently imprisoned in the Tower, but to be released in time to witness her uncle's academic debate with his rival, Rainer. Ysabel was delighted to receive her very first demon, and bound it. Its cloaking power would hide her telltale claws, her bruises from her relationship with Andreas, and her lack of hymen. What more could she want?

Sebastian returned home to a cheerful Minerva and a depressed 'Elena. 'Elena didn't get to kill anyone. Not Sebastian's father. Not Sebastian's brother. No one.

Julian: After all, killing close family relatives is the evening's passtime.

Niccolo got little sleep, and Andreas got less. Andreas told his story again and again as the authorities arrived, and he was really beginning to regret not killing Joanna Gavelli when he had the chance.

Lisa: You did have your chance.

Dave (sighing): Yes, I did.

Again, in retrospect, Joanna should have been Deeply Suspicious of Andreas. And, she should have had a gun.

Andreas was not in danger of arrest. Joanna backed his story about events in the lab. As for Einhardt's death Rainer was far more a suspect in that than Andreas.

The next day, Ingrid met her fiance, Sebastian's brother, Edmond von Black, for breakfast. Both confirmed that the other still wanted the marriage. I think some information was exchanged.

Rupert sent a note to the von Pfender house, where Sophia was staying, inviting Sophia to breakfast and promising not to propose to her again. Sophia decided to accept the invitation. On her way out of the von Pfender house, she passed Wolfram von Hirsch, the 9-year-old grandson of Dieter von Hirsch, whom she and Nariya had killed the previous night. Sophia had publically blamed this and the other killings she and Nariya had done on a hideous demon that Horst von Pfender had summoned.

Wolfram asked about the demon who'd killed his grandfather. Sophia said that she didn't like to think about it.

Wolfram (wide eyed): You're afraid of it, too?

The reason Rupert had invited Sophia over was that she was the only eyewitness to the actual appearance of a demon that he knew of, and he was quite curious. Ludwig was also curious.

According to my notes:

Sophia did not learn that the butler, Rolph, was a demon.

Sophia did learn that Ludwig was a sorcerer.

Sophia did not learn that the cats were demons, despite what my notes thought.

Ludwig did not learn that Sophia was a sorcerer or that Nariya was a demon.

Rupert, Sophia, Ludwig, and all the cat passer demons headed out to the university, where folks were gathering for the academic debate between Herr Doktor Professor Sebastian Black and Herr Doktor Professor Rainer Schwanhausser on the Nature of Man.

Ingrid, Edmund, and Ysabel were there as well, and Ingrid spoke with Ysabel, pleased to see that she had been released from the Tower and that she was covering for her earlier foolish lapses, threating sorcery and shrieking out Andreas' name. Ysabel gladly accepted Ingrid's suggestion that perhaps the shock of being kidnapped by a man who had been courting her, and having her father kidnapped as well, and knowing not what would happen to her had made her desperate enough to cry out whatever foolish thing came to mind, fearing that the rules of society no longer applied.

Ingrid recognized Ludwig as a sorcerer and his cats as demons.

Ludwig did not recognize Ingrid as a sorcerer, and her demon was not visible.

Ludwig scares Ingrid. Ingrid is smart.

Sophia was delighted that her cat and Ludwig's cats were getting along so well.

Dave: They're debating the best way to slice someone open.

Lengthwise!
Widthwise!
No, lengthwise!

The debate was a bit delayed as Sebastian learned what had happened, and he and Rainer agreed it was only proper to continue even in the face of Volkhert's disappearance and Einhardt's murder. Joanna Gavelli was picked to moderate the debate.

I thought that playing out the debate a bit would be fun, and I hadn't realized that Josh just wanted to roll dice. Still, it was interesting listening to the arguments we made.

Someone: Sebastian is losing on [I forget what. Style, perhaps.], while Rainer is losing on [Again, I forget. Common sense? Propriety?].

Josh rolled better, and the result made sense. Rainer was talking too openly of the supernatural elements of the divide between man and animal, and, despite the evidence of Einhardt's death and the murders at Dieter von Hirsch's home and the revelations about Marcello and his victims -- th audience didn't want to hear it. They wanted solid orthodoxy, which Sebastian seemed to embody, at least more than his rival.

After the debate, Sebastian got Sophia to agree not to kill Rainer for at least three days. He wanted to ask his rival some questions. Andreas showed people his, ah, Scientific Exhibits, for a fee, from which the university took its cut. Then engagment of Edmond von Black to Ingrid von Pfender was announced.

Sophia decided that she would need to summon a demon that could be blamed for all of the murders and be hunted down and killed. She has yet to do this.

Sebastian helped Niccolo summon Phaidippides, a horse passer which was created by Niccolo's painting a picture of a horse and then breaking the image. Niccolo needed this demon to get to Italy very quickly and a) tell Antonio about Marcello being dead and b) banish a bunch of possessor demons in children's bodies.

Julian reminds me that Niccolo blew the Contact roll pretty badly, which means that Niccolo may not have gotten what he wanted. He further notes that Niccolo "didn't get what he needs, either, as he needs a good hard smack upside the head with the Clue Bat."
